HEY YOU!

Frequently Asked Questions

When / Why Did You Start Chronically Strong // Advocacy?

In 2014, I had my first major abdominal surgery. In preparation for it I posted a YouTube video about IBD and my surgeries. After the surgery I started my first blog, Living with Colitis Daily, on Tumblr. I was really lonely, bored, on bedrest and didn't know anyone who could relate. I needed a way to release my frustrations and also explain to my peers what I was going through. I didn't realize people would actually care. I also didn't realize there were so many other people going through the same struggles as myself. I took a break for a while. In 2016 I changed a lot of things, moved to Wordpress and BAM! Chronically Strong - the lifestyle, wellness, IBD blog you see today! YAY!

What is IBD / Crohn’s / Colitis?

I talk about what IBD is: here.

How / When Were You Diagnosed with IBD?

You can check out my full diagnosis story: here and here.

Can You (Still) ___ Since Your Surgeries

I can do just about anything a "normal" person can do, with the exception of getting a colonoscopy 😛

What’s Your Diet Like?

can eat just about anything a "healthy" person can eat. Soy gives me issues. I don't like things of a "mushy" consistency like grits, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, ect. I am an on-again/off-again pescatarian.

What Medications Do You Take?

IBD is so individualized. It affects everyone differently. Just because something works for me, doesn't mean it will work for you. This is why I try not to disclose my medications. * sorry, i suck *

Do / Did You Have An Ostomy?

I had a temporary ileostomy from December 2014 - July 1, 2015.

How Old Are You?

It changes so often! LOL. My bday is April 28, 1992

How Often Do / Did You Change Your (Ostomy) Bag?

I was very blessed. My insurance basically had no limits on my monthly supplies. If I felt like it, I would change my bag daily. Max I would keep it on for maybe 3 days before a change. I have Eczema and very sensitive skin so I had to change more often to treat my skin // give it a break.

Do You Have Kids?

No. I talk about miscarriage: here and here.

Though mostly about IBD, this blog covers a wide array of issues.  Shawn covers complex issues, like how her identity as an African American intersects with her IBD.  I am taken aback by the depth of each post! Whether you’re a blogger or an IBDer, her posts are sure to offer tons of inspiration.
